Stallone another Rocky project: a sequel written “for himself” and a prequel set in the sixties
The actor said he has a new Rocky Balboa script ready and is exploring the boxer’s origins. Neither project has a confirmed shoot date.
Rocky Balboa keeps returning from the dead (the character, not the actor). Sylvester Stallone revealed that he has written a new chapter of the franchise focused on what life outside the ring looked like, although he has no certainty that it will ever reach a set.
“I’ve written another chapter of the Rocky saga, and I think it would be a good opportunity to explore life outside the ring, how the world around him is changing, and how his neighborhood is no longer what it used to be,” the actor said in an interview with TV Insider. His clarification is at least honest: “I wrote it simply for myself.”
A prequel with the machinery of period drama
Stallone also said he finds the idea of a Rocky prequel “fascinating.” The proposed story would explore the origins of the Italian American boxer during the 1960s, a decade marked by major social, cultural and musical transformations in the United States. The actor even has ideas about how paths crossed, although no cast or production schedule has been announced.
The franchise continues through the Creed branch. Michael B. Jordan starred in the third spin-off and confirmed that a fourth installment is in development. The original Rocky premiered more than four decades ago, and its fictional Philadelphia gym has apparently become a franchise with more staying power than several of its characters’ careers (and, let’s be fair, that is not a difficult standard).
The projects arrive amid the release of Yo soy Rocky, a biopic directed by Peter Farrelly. The film is due in cinemas on January 22, 2027, and will revisit Stallone’s early years in Hollywood and the creative and commercial process behind Rocky Balboa’s creation.
“I’ve written another chapter of the Rocky saga, and I think it would be a good opportunity to explore life outside the ring, how the world around him is changing, and how his neighborhood is no longer what it used to be. I wrote it simply for myself.”Sylvester Stallone
- New Rocky script focused on the boxer’s life outside the ring.
- Possible prequel centered on Rocky Balboa’s origins in the 1960s.
- No confirmed production dates for either project.
- Yo soy Rocky is scheduled for release on January 22, 2027.
- Michael B. Jordan confirmed that a fourth Creed installment is in development.
So, between a screenplay written for the author’s own eyes and a period prequel, there are two possible continuities. Neither is guaranteed, and the drawer where Stallone keeps the script may end up being the most stable production office in the franchise. For now, the sensible recommendation is simple: watch Yo soy Rocky when it arrives, then decide which Rocky story deserves the next round.
